Children's Dentistry Q&A

What does children’s dentistry involve?

Children’s dentistry serves the same purpose as adult dentistry: It helps prevent, diagnose, and treat oral health conditions. However, children have unique dental needs because their teeth, gums, and jaws are still growing. Dental conditions, such as cavities, can affect the development of your child’s permanent teeth or cause irreparable damage to their gums or jawbone.

The team of compassionate dentists at Bell Family Dental PC has specialized training in children’s dentistry. Most importantly, the team works hard to make sure that your child has positive early experiences at the dentist, free of stress, pain, and fear, so they feel good about continuing to receive dental care for the rest of their lives.

When should my child start visiting the dentist?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), your baby should have their first dental exam before they turn 1. This allows your dentist to check for any problems with their juvenile teeth as they develop beneath your baby’s gums. Early childhood visits should occur at the following ages:

  • 6 months
  • 18 months
  • 3 years
  • Annually after beginning kindergarten

The ADA also recommends that school-aged children have a professional teeth cleaning every six months.

What happens at a child’s dental checkup?

The dentists at Bell Family Dental PC keep routine preventive care visits for babies and toddlers very short. These visits rarely include X-rays, and you hold your child in your lap while your dentist performs an oral exam. Your dentist discusses age-appropriate at-home oral care and addresses concerns about teething, thumb-sucking, and developmental milestones.

Around age 3, your child has their first X-rays, which help your dentist identify any issues with their developing adult teeth. Your dentist checks carefully for signs of cavities, gum problems, and other concerns. Your child also has their first cleaning around this time.

Which dental services are available for older children?

The team at Bell Family Dental PC provides general dentistry as needed, including fillings and other treatments. As your child approaches adolescence, your dentist discusses any orthodontic needs with you during a routine checkup. Options for correcting crooked or misaligned teeth include traditional braces, Invisalign® clear aligners, and other orthodontic solutions.
